Remodeling, Mood boards & Design

In the last year, I started a new AirBNB business with Adam, expanded my real estate client services package and laid the groundwork for the next phase: design and renovation consultation. The Draper didn’t just scratch my renovation and preservation itch, it brought into clear focus for Adam and I how much noise there is in the remodeling market. For most people, the overwhelming nature of all the decision making leads to one of two things: 1. An immediate move. Status quo until they are forced into a remodel right before selling, never enjoying the upgrades.

In the process of sharing my work on The Draper with you, many of you reached out about your potential remodels and the challenges you were facing and we found solutions for you. Many of you reached out wanting your own project and investment house and just wanted guidance on where to start-and those of you who did that know that I have a lot to say on the subject!

So I’m making it official, my clients already get free design consultations and discounts with great contractors-but now, you can get more assistance. I’m expanding my team to include more services in this area and a suite of design services for those that want a more custom design/construction experience.

Our team is growing, our services are expanding and new announcements are coming soon! Reach out if you are in the remodel consideration phase, or if you are thinking of selling and want a jump on preparation for your down the road goals. Don’t be the one that remodels the month they move, you should get to enjoy your investment.

I impulsively bought these silly mugs with words on them, I am a no words on most things girl but that’s how they get you in the checkout line at T.J.Maxx. I realized while juggling a ton of last minute purchases that I had nothing to drink actual coffee out of the next morning, and we had a wild first night planned in the house-ripping out flooring and filthy carpet-see photos last page. The mugs are out of character and weird and we still have them. They remind me of a simpler time, before I became Contractor G.I. Jane. And for those who knew me pre-Draper and have seen me now, you know I’ve become a militant remodeler and practitioner of the dark remodeling arts. I like to think these silly mugs symbolize our remodeling alter egos. We learned so much in those roles, I want to share with you in a new feature:

No Words on Walls: Mr. Fix It & Toto on Remodeling

The Draper occupies a unique space in the remodel world; it felt like a command from the universe that we would preserve as much as we could from 1957 and design around that. There is a lot of free expression in the design Adam and I created and truthfully, we nerded out hard on mid century and found where our design perspectives met. And we did it on a BUDGET, due to the issues with the home, the design piece had to be a bargain (more on that later). This is where Adam taught me some design lessons.

Mr. Fix It-Throw Pillow It

In a previous existence, I ran a large design centric furniture store giving me the opportunity to work with some fabulous interior designers. It was there that I was introduced to the true concept of the throw pillow. Now, I knew what a throw pillow was, I owned a stack of them, I just didn’t understand the power of the throw pillow. Rather than upending your design with the bold purple leather sectional showing up on vision boards, you can utilize timeless colors and pieces on big items and make an impression with purple throw pillows. Throw pillowing, for me, has become a catch all term for accentuating and enhancing the overall design and functionality. Instead of replacing functional LVP flooring that isn’t exactly your taste, add an area rug that pops. Instead of residing your home, change out shutters, colors and light fixtures Meghan’s note, it is my newsletter after all: He did this at two houses for me and it was life changing, The benefit of doing this is twofold. It allows you to more seamlessly design the space without being tied to a design/taste extreme. Further, we all know that at some point in the next several years that purple is going to go out of style and you will want to replace it. So don’t commit big money to the hottest design trends that come and go. Focus on the timeless and throw pillow the rest.
